Running romex across 2x4s of drop ceiling

Just bought a house built in 1902. I want to add a new light fixture in the dining room that requires running 12/2 Romex to it since there is no existing fixture.

From putting an endoscope in the ceiling it looks like a drop ceiling was added at some point (I think?). It also looks like there is a gap between the 2x4s and the original ceiling.
